BURLINGTON, Vt. – University of Vermont men’s basketball junior Marqus Blakely (Metuchen, N.J.) and senior Mike Trimboli (Norwalk, Conn.) have each been named Preseason Mid-Major All-Americans by Collegehoops.net. Blakely was selected to the second team, while Trimboli was a honorable mention pick.

Vermont is one of six teams in the nation to have two representatives honored and is the only America East school to have a student-athlete selected.

Blakely was named a mid-major honorable mention selection at the end of last season by the site after a breakout sophomore season that saw him earn America East Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors. He led the league in points (19.0 pg), rebounds (11.0 pg) and blocks (2.7 pg) and by doing so became only the second player to lead the conference in all three categories, joining Northeastern’s Reggie Lewis.

Trimboli earns a spot on CHN’s Mid-Major Honorable Mention squad this year after being a preseason third team selection last year. A co-captain this year, he is seventh all-time in school history in scoring with 1,496 points and is fourth in career assists with 471. Last season he was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team after finishing third in the league in scoring with 17.9 points per game. Trimboli’s 556 points last year ranked as the 10th-most in a single season in UVM hoops history.

Vermont will host the fifth annual Catamount Tip-Off featuring the UVM men’s and women’s basketball teams on Wednesday, October 29 at Patrick Gymnasium. Tickets are $5.00 each and are available starting October 20 via the Internet at www.UVMathletics.com, at the UVM Ticket Office in Patrick Gymnasium or the day of the event. All proceeds will benefit the Vermont Cancer Center in support of breast cancer awareness. Admission is free for all UVM students with a valid ID, but donations are encouraged.
